What you feel in your golf swing and what you actually do are often far apart. Almost everyone who films themselves from behind for the first time is surprised. A smartphone video is therefore the simplest tool for getting better. With an AI analysis it becomes more than a video: an evaluation that shows what to work on first.

Here is how to film properly, what a swing analysis checks and how to use the result.

Filming right: the two views

There are two standard views, and each shows different faults:

  • Face-on: the camera is opposite you. You see stance, weight shift, sideways movement of head and hips, and impact.
  • Down the line: the camera is behind you on the target line. You see the swing plane, your spine angle and whether the club comes from outside or inside.

For both:

  1. At hip height, on a tripod or leaning against your bag.
  2. 2 to 3 metres away. Closer cuts off the club at the top; further away makes you too small.
  3. Head to feet and the whole club in the frame.
  4. Bright light and a calm background.
  5. Same spot and distance every session, or you'll be comparing apples with oranges.

The six swing phases

An analysis first breaks the swing into phases, because every fault belongs to a specific moment. The DeepSwing coach detects six phases automatically:

Phase What matters
Setup stance width, posture, spine angle, ball position
Backswing swing plane, rotation of shoulders and hips
Top position of arms and club, spine angle held
Downswing sequence of movement, path of the club
Impact hands ahead of the ball, shaft lean, hips open
Finish balance, weight on the lead leg

What the 30 checks look at

For every swing, DeepSwing checks 30 biomechanical points. They fall into five groups:

  • Posture: stance width, whether the spine angle stays stable from the top through the downswing to impact, early extension.
  • Head and balance: head movement, sway, hanging back, reverse spine.
  • Arms and hands: lead arm structure, early release or casting, shaft lean at impact, hand depth, chicken wing after impact.
  • Rotation: hip turn, weight shift, shoulder tilt and swing plane, over the top.
  • Tempo: the ratio of backswing to downswing. Many good players are at around 3 to 1.

What matters is not how many checks are red but which one comes first. That's why the coach names the fix that helps most first, with an explanation and matching drills.

The club head trail shows whether the club stays on plane.

Swing plane and club head trail

The swing plane takes more than the body. DeepSwing finds the club head in every frame with its own detection model and draws its path into the video as a trail. From it you see whether the club goes back too steep or too flat and whether it comes over the top in the downswing. How the detection works is described on our club head detection page, the body side on the body tracking page.

The analysis marks the backswing as too steep and says what to change first.

Live coach: feedback while you practise

Not everyone wants to look at the phone after every swing. The live coach checks your position before the swing, such as spine angle and stance, and gives spoken feedback afterwards. A 3D reference swing can be laid over your own image as a ghost. That way your eyes stay on the ball.

Compare instead of guess

The biggest progress comes from comparison: two swings side by side, before and after a drill, for example, or a good shot against a bad one. Combined with the launch monitor you also see what the ball did on every swing. A second phone can film the swing while the first measures the ball. What the ball numbers mean is in Launch monitor numbers explained.

Privacy: the video stays on the phone

The analysis runs on the device. Swing videos don't leave the phone for it; only what you deliberately share in the community is uploaded. Why we build AI this way is in On-device instead of cloud.

Frequently asked questions

Which view is better, face-on or down the line?

They complement each other. Face-on shows weight shift and head movement, down the line shows swing plane and spine angle. To start with, one view that you film the same way every time is enough.

How far away should the phone be?

2 to 3 metres, at hip height. Head, feet and the whole club need to be in the frame.

How much does the swing analysis cost?

The first analysis is free. After that the coach costs €9.99 a month, €59.99 a year or €149.99 once.

Are my videos uploaded?

No, the analysis runs on the smartphone. Only what you share in the community yourself is uploaded.
