Golf ball detection and ball flight tracking

A white dot, 43 millimetres, in motion. From it we compute the entire flight.

A golf ball leaves the club at well over 200 km/h and is out of frame within a few hundredths of a second. In that time our detection has to find, track and measure it. The pipeline works in an armed state: it searches for the resting ball, waits for the strike and evaluates exactly the frames that matter.

Ball detection & tracking

01

Armed instead of always computing

Detection knows three states: searching, armed, impact. Only when the ball rests in the target zone does it arm. Full-precision computation happens only around the strike. That saves battery and makes the measurement robust.

02

From frames to a flight path

The ball's position in the first frames after impact gives ball speed, vertical launch angle and direction. A physics model computes the flight from there: carry, total distance, apex and landing angle.

03

Measured honestly

Compared with a radar launch monitor (Rapsodo MLM2 PRO), our carry is within 0 to 2 percent depending on the club. We don't measure spin directly, we estimate it. And we say so openly.

02.2 — Capabilities

What it does.

In use in our products, every day, on real devices.

  1. 01

    Ball found automatically

Place the ball in the frame, detection locks it and arms itself.

  2. 02

    Impact in real time

Impact is detected in a fraction of a second, no button needed.

  3. 03

    Ball speed

The ball's speed right after impact, measured from the image.

  4. 04

    Launch angle and direction

How steep and where the ball starts, for draws, fades and straight shots.

  5. 05

    Carry and total distance

Computed with ball flight physics, wind and air density, within 0–2% of radar.

  6. 06

    Bad reads filtered

Doubtful shots are detected and don't count.

  7. 07

    Putting

On the green too: speed and direction of putts.

  8. 08

    Range and living room

Outdoors on the mat or indoors into a net, for right- and left-handed golfers.

02.3 — How it works

How it works

  1. 01

    Search

Find and lock the ball in the target zone.

  2. 02

    Armed

Wait for the strike, camera at 240 fps.

  3. 03

    Impact

Detect and measure launch within a few frames.

  4. 04

    Flight

Physics model computes carry, apex and landing.

02.5 — FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is ball measurement with a phone?

Compared with a radar launch monitor (Rapsodo MLM2 PRO), our carry deviates by 0 to 2 percent depending on the club. Ball speed, launch angle and direction are measured directly from the image.

Is spin measured?

No, spin is estimated from the measured values. We label it that way in the app and on this page on purpose.

Does it work outdoors and indoors?

Yes, on the range and in a simulator. What matters is enough light for short exposure times and a stable phone position.

What should your camera recognise?

Object detection, body tracking, segmentation or cartography, on your device, in real time. Let's talk about it.
